Deadly Mosquito Species

Female mosquitoes are specifically the only ones who bite humans, while their male counterparts are herbivorous. Female mosquitoes need human blood to get protein, which they need to develop normal eggs.

  • Aedes Aegypti - originated from sub-Saharan Africa, and now distributed throughout tropical and subtropical countries. These transmit diseases such as Dengue, Yellow Fever, Zika virus, and Chikungunya.
  • Aedes Albopictus – came from Southeast Asia. These spread Dengue and Chikungunya viruses. Some studies claim that this species may also transmit Zika virus, West Nile, Eastern Equine Encephalitis and Japanese Encephalitis.
  • Anopheles Genus – a Malaria-carrying species. They also can carry virus that causes brain tumors, as Anopheles genus has several different types. Anopheles gambiae are found in Africa, and Anopheles Quadrimaculatus are found in eastern US.
  • Culex Pipiens – the species that buzz in your ear, and the primary culprit of West Nile virus. They have also been associated with Usutu Virus and Japanese Encephalitis.
  • Culex Tarsalis – associated with West Nile virus, Western Equine Encephalitis, St. Louis Encephalitis and California Encephalitis. They are mostly seen in California, Utah, and the western half of North America.
