Pest Borne Diseases: The Plague

February 20, 2019

When we think of the Plague, the next thing that comes to mind is the damages it caused during the Middle Ages. The disease wiped out more than half of the world’s population, and mankind took almost two centuries to recover from it. Or maybe one thinks about as far back as the biblical ages, wherein plagues were mentioned several in the Old Testament.

Those events occurred hundreds and thousands of years ago, but we can not talk about the plague in the past tense. Believe it or not, plagues continue to plague the United States. That is, even with the advancement in antibiotics.

The most common forms of plague are bubonic, septicemic, and pneumonic. Symptoms depend on which type of plague the patient was exposed to. Plague is a very serious illness and needs immediate attention when these symptoms occur.

Plague Symptoms

Bubonic Plague:

Patients develop fever, chills, weakness, headache, and swollen lymph nodes. This results from an infected flea bite. The bacteria can spread into the other parts of the body if not treated with the right antibiotics.

Septicemic Plague:

Fever, abdominal pain, weakness, chills, shock, and possibly bleeding skin and organs are the symptoms for this type of plague. Skins on the nose, fingers, and toes may die and turn black. This also results from the bite of an infected flea or other infected animals.

Pneumonic Plague:

Fever, weakness, headache, and pneumonia with shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, and bloody or watery mucus. This stems from untreated bubonic or septicemic plague and is the most fatal form of the disease. It is also the only plague that can be spread from one human to the other via infectious droplets.

Prevention

Rodents are the number one cause of this disease. So it follows that to prevent plagues from happening, it is important to remove mice from your surroundings. Here are a few tips to help control mice, and therefore to prevent the spread of plagues:

1. Deny mice access to your house. Seal off cracks and holes on your walls, doors, and windows.

2. Remove things that can be used as habitat for the mice. Junk, rock piles, boxes, old newspapers, and firewood are some of the things they like to hide on.

3. Keep your food in sealed containers. Food in cartons and packets are vulnerable to mice attacks. Food is what the mice come into your homes for. Removing their food source diminishes their reason for being there.

4. Use flea control products for your pets. Fleas are the original source of the plague, and the mice are the carriers. Taking steps to remove the fleas minimizes the risk of getting the plague.
