July 24, 2020

There are many kinds of insects living in this world. The truth is, we do not really know all of them. Not only that, we also don't know what to call each of them. There are around 900,000 different kinds of insect species or living insects in the world.

Gnats are one of the many species of tiny flying creatures. Gnat is the common name everyone uses for insects that are tiny and have wings in the fly family. People find them annoying and look at gnats as a nuisance. But no matter what kind of issues they bring us, and how annoying they can be, one thing is for sure; these creatures serve a purpose in nature. They pollinate flowers and are an important food source for birds, bats, and other larger kinds of insects. This does not mean that we do not need to get rid of them though, especially if they have already invaded our homes.

In this article, we will talk about these tiny creatures and how we can get rid of them. Read on.

Life Cycle

To know more about gnats, let us go through the life cycle and see how these creatures’ lives develop:

Just like with all the other pests, gnats develop through four different stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The life cycle of gnats typically lasts for about 4 weeks where warm temperatures are achieved and maintained. Adult gnats can live to about 7-10 days. They deposit eggs on the moist soil surface or in soil cracks.

There Are Different Kinds Of Gnats And Here Are Some Of Them:

  • Fruit flies - Fruit flies are small insects that are about 1/8th of an inch in length. The color of this fly is tan and their abdomen is black with a gray underbelly. They often have red eyes but some can also have dark-colored eyes. Also, they feed on decaying fruit, vegetables, and other organic items.

  • Eye gnats - Eye gnats are normally present hovering around the eyes of a human being or animal. These are non-biting pests but are in love to fluids secreted by the nose, eyes, and ears on both humans and animals. Some species also like the discharge from open wounds.

  • Fungus gnats - These gnats are into the moisture present on potting soil. They affect indoor houseplants but are completely harmless to humans. This is because they don’t bite and spread diseases just like the other gnats.

  • Black flies - Black flies are visible in areas with running waters like cool-water rivers and streams. They attack wildlife, livestock, poultry, and humans.

  • Biting midges - These creatures have blood-sucking habits and it’s a bit concerning because they can possibly transmit diseases.

  • Phorid flies - These are black or dull brown flies which are most commonly mistaken as fruit flies because of their appearance. They are attracted to decaying plants and animals

How To Address The Gnat Issue

There are plenty of ways to trap, repel, and keep them from coming back. Here are some tips to help you get rid of them.

If you are the kind of person who doesn’t like using chemicals or pesticides, the best way to go is to use natural or homemade remedies. One of your many options is to use a flypaper. Flypaper catches flying insects and placing a piece of it in some areas in your home, counter tops, or hanging one in the window will surely catch those annoying insects. The sticky substance or glue in the paper will trap the insects.

A bug zapper is also an option. The good thing about using this machine is that you don’t have to exert too much effort catching gnats and flies. This machine is safe to use indoors and there are plenty of brands and designs available now in the market which you can easily purchase. Another easy and good way to get rid of gnats is by using a candle as a trap. Sure, it looks too good to be true but it can really do some magic! It is best to do this at night. Prepare a pan or basin and place a candle on it. Light the candle, turn off the lights, and wait for gnats to make their way to the flame. Once a candle is alight they will either hit the flame or fall into the water you placed below. But be careful when doing this! You don’t want to burn your house down so you must stay in the area. Make sure to turn off the candle when you are done catching gnats.

One good thing about gnats is that if there are only a few of them, you can use materials which you can easily find in your kitchen. Yes, there are ordinary things from your kitchen you can use to catch or get rid of these itsy bitsy creatures. An apple cider vinegar can be used as a trap. Place it in the area where you mostly see the gnats and wait for these insects to come. These insects will surely be lured by the sugary mixture but the sticky dish soap will trap them. You can also use wine as a trap. Do not worry! We know wines are expensive and you do not need to sacrifice your most-loved collection just to get rid of these nuisances. If you happen to have a cheaper one then you can definitely use that. You can use it the same way you use the apple cider vinegar. Easy and inexpensive!

For sure you get rotten fruits from time to time. These too can be used as a trap. An overripe fruit is an effective trap for these insects. They are sweet and can easily lure gnats in no time. Just place a few pieces of overripe fruits on a large bowl, cover with plastic wrap and use a rubber band to keep it firmly in place. Put a few holes in plastic wrap where the gnats can make their way and soon they will be trapped inside. You can use a toothpick or barbecue stick to create holes in the plastic wrap.

If you do not feel like trying these methods though, you can always purchase a chemical spray. In some situations, it may need or require a more serious bug killer. There are different brands you can purchase over the counter. Do your research and check which brand is best to use for that specific kind of insect. If you think using insect spray is way better than trying the suggestions above, feel free to use one but make sure to be very cautious. Make it a habit to read the label for instructions and be sure not to spray it inside the house when there are people around, especially children. Note that insect sprays contain harmful ingredients that are bad for one’s health so it’s more advisable to use it when no one is around.
