About Pests

Pests can be described as insects or animals that adversely affect the daily activities of humans. Whatever they do seems detrimental to human wellbeing. We can classify pests into three areas; there are household, agricultural, and garden pests.

Examples of household pests are mosquitoes, roaches, rats, mice, bed bugs, poisonous spiders, and moths. In the garden, there are aphids, mealybugs, and stink bugs. In agriculture, there are locusts, whiteflies, and grasshoppers.

Pests vary in degree in inflicting torture on household owners. There are some that are a mere nuisance. Silverfish is one example of this; its mere presence alone makes it a pest though they are not known to transmit diseases nor destroy property. Some pests are known to destroy, the most notorious of which are the termites. Termites are not dubbed as the “silent destroyers” for nothing. Also, there are some that are high health risks, like mosquitoes, roaches, rats, and mice.

How Do We Classify An Insect Or Animal As Pests?

Animals and insects become pests when:

  • They contaminate or damage stored food. Mice, rats, and roaches, eat whatever there is on the dining table. So they contaminate these foods with their droppings, saliva, and urine. Weevils and moths attack stored dry foods.

  • They carry bacteria and viruses and transmit nasty diseases to humans, like mosquitoes which cause dengue and malaria, and roaches which cause typhoid fever and salmonella.

  • When they damage structures like homes and office buildings like termites, carpenter ants, and rodents.

  • They damage clothing. Clothes moths and silverfish eat clothes and put holes in them in the process.

  • They attack and eat crops, like caterpillars and locusts.

  • They bite people, like bed bugs, poisonous spiders, fleas, and mosquitoes.

There are actually thousands of different kinds of pests that are harmful to humans. Let us take a look at the most common ones here in Randolph County.

Different Kinds Of Pests

1. Mosquitoes

Of all the pests on this list, mosquitoes are probably the ones you will have to pay more attention to. They are tiny, blood-sucking flying insects. Mosquitoes are the most dangerous creatures on the planet since they have killed more people than all the wars in history combined. Each year, mosquitoes continue to kill, accounting for millions of deaths all over the world.

Looking at them, mosquitoes do not seem to amount to much; they are tiny, fragile-looking insects that you can crush with two fingers. Yet inside those small bodies are pathogens that cause deadly diseases. Only adult female mosquitoes bite; male mosquitoes do not have the necessary mouthparts to suck blood. Females have two tubes in their mouths, one is for secreting enzymes that would prevent blood clotting, and the other to suck blood. They do this in order to fertilize their eggs, but they feed on nectar for nourishment, just like their male counterparts.

Mosquitoes love to breed in standing water. With this, getting rid of items that can hold water must be removed to get rid of mosquitoes. Throw away items that can hold water, like old cans, water containers, old tires, old gutters, and abandoned birdbaths. To prevent mosquito bites, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Use mosquito repellents with the active ingredient DEET for added protection.

2. Cockroaches

Cockroaches are notorious for being the filthiest creatures on the planet. They thrive in the dirtiest places like sewers, garbage bins, and cesspools. They eat anything, from rotten food, trash, feces, to trash. Due to their filthy habits, bacteria and viruses become their constant companion. Because of this, it makes them disease transmitters. Some of the diseases they transmit are salmonella, typhoid fever, and cholera.

Roaches are hardy insects, they do not just die easily. They can survive for 1 month without food and 1 week without water. Cockroaches can survive with their heads cut off for one week, breathing through the tiny holes located all over their bodies. They die only because they cannot drink water. Aside from that, they can run fast, easily avoiding their enemies which of course includes humans. Roaches can also hide inside cracks and crevices. All they need is a crack that is the size of a credit card. New research has shown that roaches have developed immunity from pesticides.

With that being said, we can still prevent a cockroach infestation in our homes. Good housekeeping is the way to go. Regularly sweep and mop the floors. Cover your trash with a lid tightly, and regularly dispose of your garbage properly. Place your food inside sealed containers. Do not leave unwashed dishes on the kitchen sink overnight.

3. Mice

The third member of the ‘Big 3” of all household pests is mice. They may be cute, but they really pack a punch! Mice are not just a nuisance but are also health risks too. They can destroy our stuff mercilessly and eat our food.

Mice are constantly chewing on something. This is because their incisors are constantly growing, and chewing makes it stop. They destroy books, boxes, cardboard, paper, and walls. Also, they chew on electric wirings and gas pipes, making them a real fire hazard.

Once you detect a single mouse, make sure to act on it at once before it is too late. They reproduce very quickly. A female mouse can reproduce at 5 weeks old and will continue to do so every three weeks until it dies.

To prevent infestation, seal cracks and holes around the house. Anything that is the size of the nickel must be sealed by caulking. Cover your trash with a tight lid, and regularly dispose of your garbage. Keep your food protected by placing it inside a sealed container. Fix leaky pipes and faucets.

4. Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are tiny insects, about the size of an apple seed, that sucks blood from humans and animals in order to survive. They have brown, flat, oval-shaped bodies that turn red and bloated after a blood meal. Bed bugs bites are extremely itchy. However, there are more to bed bugs than just their bites. Bed bugs are considered as high health risks by three U.S. government agencies, namely the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Center for Disease Control, and the Environmental Protection Agency. People who have reported having bed bugs in their homes also reported cases of stress, depression, and anxiety. Not only that, sleeplessness, social isolation, and even depression can also happen. Bed bugs multiply fast, so it is important to act on bed bug infestation quickly before they spread.

The leading cause of bed bug infestation is travel. This is because bed bugs are good hitchhikers. So when you travel, check your hotel rooms for bed bugs. Check the beds, bed frame, headboard, mattress, and pillows. Other places they might be hiding are in drawers, electric receptacles, furniture, and in cracks and crevices of the walls and ceilings.

In case you have bed bug infestation problems, the best course of action would be to call the professionals.
