How To Treat For Weevils Near Elgin

February 14, 2019

The town of Elgin traces its roots back to 1899 – 1900. It was a time when the Seaboard Coastline Railroad was traversing the midlands of South Carolina. The area, formerly known as Blaney, was incorporated on January 23, 1908. From Blaney, it was renamed Elgin, named after the Elgin National Watch Company. The watch company set up shop in March 1963 and was able to employ 200 residents. The company, however, closed down on September 1963 as they could not compete with foreign watch companies.

Today, Elgin has an estimated population of 1,550 residents. It is a part of the Columbia, South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area.

And like all cities in the United States, Elgin has its share of pest problem, in particular weevils.

What Are Weevils?

Weevils are small beetles about 6 mm in size. They are distinguished by their long snouts and can live up to 8 months long. For a bug, that is quite a lifespan.

Weevils are pests. They are known to damage and kill crops; crops like corn, grain, and cotton. Outside your homes, they can kill your garden plants; indoors they contaminate your food with their feces. Farmers abhor them.

They are also a source of annoyance for homeowners. Once weevils invade homes, they usually do so in great numbers. They manage to enter homes whenever they find small openings. Homeowners often find them on the walls and the windowsills.

Habitat

Weevils feed on plants and crops. That is why they are always found in gardens, on plants, and orchards.

Control

1. Throw away food that is infested by the weevil. Once you spot weevils at home, dispose of the food products that are contaminated. Then after removing these contaminated products, thoroughly vacuum the areas you deem were infested by the weevils. If you find the weevils in newly bought food products, return them to the store immediately. Make sure it will be destroyed. The number of weevils should decrease once you are able to locate the contaminated foods.

2. Store food in air-tight containers. Inspect other unopened food items, especially those in boxes, to check if these were contaminated too. This will prevent weevils from contaminating your food.

3. Seal off all cracks an opening in your house, as weevils can make this their entry points.

4. Weevils prefer damp, dark places. What you can do is put a damp cloth in dark places within your house. Soon you would be catching weevils. Once you find enough weevils on the cloth, put the cloth in water to wash them away. Repeat as necessary.
