There are over 3,500 different types of cockroaches that roam the earth today. Luckily only four of these species thrive in the United States. These four species are called German, American, Oriental, and Brownbanded cockroaches. All of these roaches love living in human spaces and they do not discriminate based on socioeconomic status, housekeeping ability, or race. Roaches can become a problem for anyone. So if you spot a roach it is best to call experienced local Columbia exterminators so they can help identify the species and then recommend the best roach treatment services for you. Here is some information about the four species commonly found in America.

The German Roach

The German Roach (Blattella germanica) is about 9/16” in length, has two antenna, six legs and a light brown body with two dark stripes on its head. The female German Roach can lay up to 40 eggs at a time and about 300 eggs in her life time. This species of roaches is known for its rapid breeding and love of warm, dark, humid places. The best place to check for an infestation of this type of roach is to look in bathrooms, kitchens or other places with a water source. They also prefer paper, cardboard, and wood for their nesting sites.

The American Roach

The American Roach (Periplaneta americana) is about 1 ½ “ in length and is reddish brown in color. It has the typical six legs and two antennas that are usual for roaches but it also sports a pale band on the edge of its head. The American Roach is a very large roach and the female can carry up to 14 eggs in one egg case. She will carry her eggs with her until the day before they are ready to hatch, depositing them in a secluded place. This species of roach is commonly found in sewers, around pipes, in commercial establishments, and other areas that are warm and humid.

The Oriental Roach

The Oriental Roach (Blatta orientalis) is about 1 – 1 ¼ “ in length, with a body and head that is dark red, brown, and black. The female Oriental Roach can lay up to 14 eggs at a time, leaving the sac in food or other rubbish lying around in an isolated area. This type of roach is commonly found in warm, moist areas that have a lot of organic substances around, like dirt, mulch, or wood chips.

The Brownbanded Roach

The Brownbanded Roach (Supella longipalpa) is about9/16” in length with two antenna, six legs, tan-golden body, and a faint V-shaped band on its wings. The female Brownbanded Roach can lay up to 16 eggs at a time and sticks them underneath objects and in isolated cracks. This type of roach prefers to live in warm, dry places usually at off of the ground and more towards eye level. You can find them around kitchen cabinets, table joints, in the shower, on wall decorations, or any motorized, warm area.

If you think you have seen any of these types of roaches in your house or other type of property then you should call an experienced Columbia exterminator. Early detection and action is the best way to quick roach extermination.
